The Nursing and Midwifery Council establish standards of education, training, conduct and performance for nursing and midwifery and to ensure those standards are maintained, thereby safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the public. The Fitness to Practise (FtP) Directorate processes allegations of impairment of fitness to practise made against nurses and midwives on grounds including misconduct, lack of competence and ill health.

The overriding purpose of FtP proceedings is to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the public. Listed below are the various Panels that consider and adjudicate on complaints made to the NMC.

Investigating Committee Panels
Panels of the Investigating Committee (IC) are responsible for considering all allegations made to the NMC about unfitness to practise.

Conduct and Competence Committee Panels
Panels of the Conduct and Competence Committee (CCC) consider allegations referred to them by the Investigating Committee (IC) or the Health Committee (HC).

Professional Conduct Committee Panels
Panels of the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) are responsible for considering allegations of misconduct. >

The Health Committee Panels
Panels of the Health Committee (HC) decide whether or not a nurse or midwife's fitness to practise is impaired by health and, if so, what is the appropriate sanction required to ensure the safety of the public.

Registrar's Appeals Panels
Where appeals are made, panels will consider the Registrar's decision and the appellant's case against that decision.
